The ISSP UL has seized an incredible opportunity to enhance its visibility by participating in the 11th season (2024/2025) of the National Television Channel 1 (LTV1) youth erudition quiz show “Gudrs, vēl gudrāks” (Smart and Even Smarter). This show not only showcases our researchers and serves as a powerful platform to inspire the next generation of scientists. As experts posing questions to participants—pupils from grades 5-12—our researchers are making significant contributions to a show that airs every Friday at 18:50.
The "Smart and Even Smarter" format includes four matches per grade group, featuring three semi-finals and a final, where each participant is supported by a teacher and at least ten classmates. The excitement culminates in a grand prize of a tablet PC or a gyro scooter for the winner, fostering a competitive yet educational environment. The show not only rewards the winners but also instills a sense of curiosity and a love for learning in all the participants, contributing to the development of a scientifically literate society.
So far, ISSP UL researchers have actively engaged with the audience by asking 16 questions across shows featuring grades 6 through 9. Our teams from the Laboratory of Optical Materials, Laboratory of Organic Materials, Laboratory of Microscopy, and Energy Materials Laboratory have crafted questions that reflect their respective fields, thus showcasing the breadth of scientific inquiry at ISSP UL.
Crucially, to promote STEM education and challenge the enduring stereotype of scientists as predominantly male, almost all expert questions have been posed by our talented female researchers: Madara Leimane, Virgīnija Vītola, Miļena Dile, Annamarija Trausa, Līga Ignatāne, Adriana Miglāne, Anete Bērziņa, Margarita Anna Zommere, and Līga Grīnberga. Their visible presence not only highlights the expertise of women in science but also serves as a beacon of encouragement for young girls considering a career in STEM. By presenting strong female role models, we are actively inspiring a new generation to pursue scientific careers, demonstrating that women have a vital place in the scientific community.
