ISSP UL’s young researchers acquire new skills at the DESY synchrotron center

Young researchers from the ISSP UL’s EXAFS Spectroscopy Laboratory, Vitālijs Dimitrijevs and Inga Pudža, participated in training at German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) research center in Hamburg. The young researchers acquired new skills at PETRA III P65 experimental line.

This visit allowed the participants to master how to work with a liquid helium cryostat and various X-ray detectors (ionization chambers and SDD detectors). Young researchers learned how to prepare samples for an X-ray absorption experiment in a chemical laboratory and learned to use software to control the X-ray absorption experiment and its data analysis. The acquired skills will be used in ongoing and future projects.

Established in 1959, DESY is one of the world’s leading accelerator centers with large-scale facilities to explore the microcosm in all its variety – from the interactions of tiny elementary particles and the behavior of new types of nanomaterials to biomolecular processes that are essential to life.
