The 21st International Conference on Radiation Effects in Insulators (REI-21) took place in Fukuoka, Japan, from September 3 to September 8, 2023. Among the distinguished participants was the leading researcher from ISSP UL’s Laboratory of Kinetics in Self-Organizing Systems, Dr.phys. Anatolijs Popovs and leading researcher from the Laboratory of Spectroscopy, Dr.phys. Vladimirs Pankratovs.
Dr. Popovs took center stage on Wednesday, September 6, captivating the audience with his oral talk, titled Distinctive Features of Thermal Annealing of Radiation Defects in Functional Materials for Fusion Applications. This presentation served as a brilliant synthesis of the results stemming from Eurofusion Enabling Research projects masterfully led by Anatolijs Popovs at the ISSP UL.
On Monday, September 4, the ISSP UL researcher assumed the role of chair for steering discussions and fostering an atmosphere of collaboration among the attendees. As the day unfolded, he also participated in the International Committee Meeting. Here, Dr. Popovs diligently reported on the application submitted to host the next prestigious conference, either REI-22 or REI-23, in the vibrant city of Riga. This endeavor held paramount significance for the ISSP UL, a global powerhouse not only in solid-state radiation physics but also in consistently securing pertinent projects through EUROfusion.
The diversity of Dr. Popovs’ contributions continued during the Poster session on Tuesday, September 5:
- In the poster session PA02, Popovs’ team conducted an exhaustive exploration of color centers in BaFBr crystals, employing a combination of experimental observations and theoretical simulations. This comprehensive approach aimed to unravel the complexities surrounding color centers in these crystals.
- Meanwhile, Dr. Popovs’ dedication to pushing scientific boundaries was evident in the PA57 presentation, where his team delved into the synthesis and experimental-theoretical investigation of a novel class of heterostructures, shedding light on previously undiscovered aspects of their properties.
- The pursuit of cutting-edge technology persisted in PB74, where researcher delved into the electron-beam-assisted synthesis of Ga2O3 ceramics, showcasing a continuous commitment to advancing scientific understanding and technological innovation.
Vladimirs Pankratovs was an invited speaker on Friday, September 8. His presentation was dedicated to “Swift Heavy Ion Induced Radiation Effects in Scintillator Materials”.
