On September 27, the final Friday of September, the 19th European Researchers’ Night was held. A total of 35 universities, innovation centers, and research institutions across various cities in Latvia opened their doors to the public, attracting approximately 21,200 visitors. Among these institutions, the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) welcomed science enthusiasts, inviting them to explore a world of exciting experiments and engaging activities.
With the support of around 70 dedicated ISSP UL staff members, including young researchers from 11 laboratories, the event transformed into a memorable journey through the "labyrinth of knowledge" spread across five floors of ISSP UL’s building.
Visitors enjoyed a delightful array of experiences, including glow-in-the-dark soft drinks, "smoky" snacks, and spectacular demonstrations like exploding hydrogen bubbles. Attendees explored the unique properties of light and witnessed the movement of air firsthand. A highlight was the special chocolate microchip workshop, where creativity merged with science. Adding to the excitement, a breakout game challenged participants on one of the floors, and all visitors were encouraged to solve a letter puzzle. Many attendees engaged deeply, spending nearly half an hour searching for a 15-letter word that was the solution to the puzzle. Once the correct word was discovered, participants received a souvenir gift for their efforts. And let’s not forget the live fire show just outside the ISSP UL, which captivated audiences every hour!
This year, nearly 700 attendees—primarily school students and families—joined us, eager to discover that physics can be both fun and fascinating. The enthusiasm was palpable as visitors engaged in hands-on activities designed by our passionate staff.
The European Researchers’ Night is a celebration of science, showcasing its diversity and relevance in our daily lives in an enjoyable and inspiring way. The event aims to bridge the gap between researchers and the public, promote outstanding research initiatives across Europe and beyond, spark young people’s interest in scientific careers, and highlight the important contributions researchers make to society. This extraordinary night attracts over 1.5 million visitors each year, and we are thrilled to be part of it!
