On October 4, a group of professors from the Department of Photonics at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) in Taiwan visited the ISSP UL. The delegation included four esteemed professors: Mitch Ming Chi Chou, Chao Kuei Lee, Yuan-Yao Lin, and Yi Yen Chiu. This visit was part of the ongoing successful scientific collaboration between the ISSP UL and NSYSU, which led to the establishment of the Taiwan and the Baltic States Research Center on Physics on March 12, 2020.
The visit began with Professors Chou, Lee, and Lin touring the ISSP UL. Professor Chao Kuei Lee met with Vari Karitāns, the lead researcher of the ISSP UL’s Laboratory of Visual Perception, to discuss a joint project and explore the laboratory’s facilities. Meanwhile, Professors Chou and Lin visited the Spectroscopy and Thin Film Laboratories.
Following the laboratory tours, Andrew Lee, a representative from the Taipei Mission in the Republic of Latvia (TMIL), and his secretary joined the Taiwanese professors. The Taipei Mission plays a crucial role in fostering bilateral relations between Taiwan, Latvia, and Estonia, focusing on trade, investment, and cultural, educational, scientific, and technological exchanges.
The Taiwanese professors and TMIL representatives met with Andris Anspoks, the ISSP UL director, and Andris Šternbergs, the ISSP UL deputy director for science. They were also joined by leading researchers Laima Trinklere from the Spectroscopy Laboratory and Varis Karitāns from the Laboratory of Visual Perception. The meeting centered on the Taiwan and the Baltic States Research Center on Physics and the potential for further collaboration in scientific research. Professor Yi Yen Chiu also participated in the discussions. The meeting concluded with a joint lunch, where conversations continued about future cooperation and joint research initiatives.
On October 5, the Taiwanese scientists departed for Tartu, Estonia, to participate in the Functional Materials & Nanotechnologies (FMNT 2024) conference, taking place from October 6-9. This conference serves as a platform for researchers to share their latest discoveries and insights in functional materials, nanotechnology, and innovation.
