On October 8-10, representatives of the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) participated in the second edition of “Baltic Photonics” business-to-business meeting that was held in Visoriai Information Technology Park in Vilnius as well as the 2019 Baltic Photonic Cluster (BPC) annual meeting.
Baltic Photonics is an annual professional event that brings together the photonics technology experts and leaders to discuss technology developments, applications, and challenges. The purpose of the event is to catalyse and facilitate new technology development collaborations and boost technological and commercial advancement. Companies and institutions are invited to present latest developments, products and services in order to find project partners, customers or suppliers. During the extended coffee breaks, lunches, company visits and networking event, much networking oriented opportunities are created.
The format of the event gave each participant company or public institution a chance to present their collaboration needs and capabilities and left enough time and freedom to have effective business-to-business meetings after the main program. More than 50 participants from about 10 countries clearly indicated that such format is suitable and interesting for many national and international photonics stakeholders. Director of ISSP UL Mārtiņš Rutkis presented newly developed infrared light sensor with unique performance. Deputy director for Innovation Andris Anspoks presented technology transfer unit MATERIZE that was created for cooperation with the industry.
At the 2019 BPC annual meeting it was decided to create an annual prize for student research in the Baltics. The prize is to be connected to 16th International Young Scientist conference “Developments in Optics and Communications” 2020 (DOC). Secondly, the BPC decided to increase its presence in social media and have the next annual meeting around April 2020 in Riga in conjunction with DOC. BPC now is led by Jurģis Poriņš (Riga Technical University).
